With so many public education dollars being wasted outside the classroom, I think it is shameful to see school administrators threatening to fire teachers as the "first option" in balancing their books.

The Texas Legislature has a clear mandate for voters to balance the budget without raising taxes — but also to make sure our education tax dollars are spent wisely and in the classroom.

The ratio of teachers to non-teachers must be improved, and it is time to end the lavish pay and benefit packages offered to administrators and others with little or no classroom contact with students. We want more education for our dollar, not more dollars spent in the school bureaucracies.

The TEA provides budget snapshots for individual districts that do not include these measures.

• Total Spent per Student: total actual expenditures / total students
  (the TEA has a similar but misleading measure based on partial expenditures)
• Percent Spent on Instruction: total expenditures / total actual instructional expenses
• Average Teacher Salary: directly from TEA
• Superintendent Salary (FTE): directly from TEA
